ACI Boland recognized an opportunity to save the District significant dollars and to preserve its heritage by restoring and upgrading the facility instead of tearing it down. We successfully addressed safety, security, and accessibility in converting Shawnee Mission South District Stadium to the modern needs of the District

Working closely with our consultants and construction manager we devised a plan that repaired the crumbling concrete structure, filled in many of the vomitoriums, and moved the traffic flow from under the bleachers to in front of them. Changing crowd circulation greatly reduced the number of people needed to supervise entry points and observe for safety and security. New seatback chair sections were also installed with refurbished bleacher seating.

The new “Champions Plaza” at the south end of the complex contains a central concession stand with separate restrooms for each side of the stands. The Plaza is a gathering spot for students that allows for better supervision, socialization, and circulation.

A new ADA-accessible press box with operable windows was built on top of the existing bleacher structure with an elevator for officials and coaches that eliminated the need to walk through the crowd. Handicapped accessibility, a new turf playing field, track surface, turf practice field, jumping and throwing event spaces, and a video board are also part of the new South Stadium Complex.

See a video of the new stadium here.
